Chapter Twenty-Three

I was flipping through the pages of the file when I heard something resembling footsteps. I didn't want to take chances so I immediately jumped off the stool and picked out a dusty book. I sat on the stool and opened the book acting like I had been reading it. The door flung open and I pretended as if I was engrossed in the book.

“What are you doing here and without my permission?" Nikolai's voice boomed throughout the study. I snapped up to look at him, fear looming in my eyes. I stood up and closed the book as I tried to explain.

“I— I well, i— was just— you said I should find out!" I yelled in defense, holding up the book. Thankfully, I picked up a book called Mysteries so chances were he believed me. Nikolai pursed his lips then nodded. He walked further into the study and that was when I noticed he was in nothing but his suit jeans and his black shirt was unbuttoned. It looked like he came here in a rush.

Nikolai walked up to the opposite shelf and pulled out a large black book
