Twenty-One

CHASE POV

I scoured the surroundings for a while, releasing a growl as a new yet familiar scent infiltrated my nostrils. Having canceled my appointment with Sharon, I sensed danger in the air. I lingered by the woods before eventually making my way back home. Whoever had been stalking me remained in the vicinity, but I was cautious about exposing myself.

While I wasn't precisely vulnerable or capable of dealing with anyone who crossed me, I harbored doubts that the threat was solely human.

Approaching the door, I narrowed my eyes upon hearing rustling from the shrubs a few feet away. My ears perked and twitched, and a low growl escaped me as the intruder leaped out of concealment. A large grey wolf with gleaming red eyes stood before me. Assuming a defensive stance, I observed that it was not alone.

"Who the hell are you?!" I growled, my eyes narrowing further. I attempted to probe their mind, but my gift chose the most inconvenient time to falter.
