Father

The next morning, Denise shifted awake. Her eyes fluttered open while her lips parted to yawn, welcoming the view of one side of Kain’s room. She had not remembered falling asleep last night but strangely, she had not dreamt of the dead or her mother. The dream of the pooling blood and the voice cursing her did not repeat either. Instead, she had slept rather soundly. And that was quite odd. She rarely ever managed to sleep this well.

But the soft breaths she soon heard behind her, told her the reason. Kain had slept in his bed next to her. That had never happened before. Why…did he stay? Perhaps he forgot to leave?

Shifting very gently on the bed with her hands curled up against her chest, she turned her body towards him, eyes running over his face. He looked peaceful and harmless while he slept, almost like an innocent puppy with his handsome face, messy hair and long lashes. Why couldn’t he be this calm and peaceful when awake?

Sighing, she pushed herself up slowly then settled one
