Chapter 5: Mrs. Smart and Mr. Smarter

The bottle crushed right into the wall and cracked into several pieces with wine splashing all over the floor.

“What is wrong with you Nina!”

“You snuck a girl in here? How low of you!” She accused.

“Which girl? You’re embarrassing yourself and me, Nina”

Nina stopped and looked around the room, there was no one there. She started frantically searching the room like a maniac.

“Show yourself I know you’re in here!” She yelled while still searching she stepped on a glass in the process and hurt herself. Even as she was bleeding she was still yelling for whoever was hiding to come out. Cody carried her in his arms and sat on the bed trying to examine the bruise under her feet.

“You hurt yourself, sit still let me dress it up for you” he reached for a first aid box and started to clean up her cuts.

“Why did you come here Cody?” She asked after a brief moment of silence.

“You didn’t want me working, there are some documents i need to go through and sign, that’s why I snuck in here, I didn’t want to upset you”

He said pointing to some files and laptop in the corner. Nina began to feel bad, she attacked him for nothing, her informant must have been mistaken. “But I saw a female enter this room” she insisted.

“I called for room service, those on night duty were asleep or done for the night, that’s why she walked in, in casual clothing” Cody explained.

Nina felt defeated, not only did she feel bad but now she owed him an apology.

“I’m sorry Cody, I didn’t mean to…”

“It’s fine honey just go to bed…”

“I don’t want to sleep here, let’s go back to our room, it smells better in there”

Nina made her way to her parents home immediately she was back from her one week vacation. Mrs. Story met her at the entrance while she was on her way out.

“Nina? Why are you here?”

“Mum, let’s go inside I have something to tell you”

They were in the hall when a maid served them some hot tea.

“Mr. Xu, gifted me this from China last week, he said it calms you down and makes you stay younger” mrs. Story announces happily.

“How many boxes did he bring I’d need all of them” Nina said with a stern face.

“Is something wrong?” Her mother began to wonder.

“I know Cody and I agreed to never involve anyone in our marital issues, but that was a stupid agreement, Cody’s family calls the shots in our marriage including you mum” Nina fumed.

“Easy darling, everything we’ve ever done was for both of you…” Mrs. Story explained.

“No mum, it was for you and your businesses, I’m not happy, Cody is emotionally distant from me I don’t feel loved at all” she stated. Her mother looked at her in displeasure.

“What do you want? His soul and his life? Cody adores you, he has surrendered his whole being to you what else do you want?” Mrs. Story chastised.

“That’s how it looks on the outside, not everything you see is the way it is, he’s emotionally unavailable, we don’t chat like a normal couple, he only gives yes and no responses, he tells me nothing about his day, neither does he ask about mine, if he can, he does his best to avoid me, he’s at the beck and call of his mother and sisters, Cody may provide my physical needs which are very little, but my emotional needs mean nothing to him at all”

Mrs. Story blinked “ why did you marry him? Was it not for business, comfort, wealth and fame?”

“Fame? Comfort?” Nina scoffed “which of the Whyte kids are famous? Was i not comfortable before I married him?”

Nina was right the Whyte family kept their children out of the public’s eye. Their social media accounts didn’t even bare their real names and many people didn’t even know their real identity. They only knew that the founders of C.P corporation had three children that’s all. They were never extravagant, the kids were never allowed to do too much that would draw attention to them. Their parents did this to protect their identity and maintain their privacy. Cody or Cecily or Cara could pass by and no one would know who they were maybe just assume that they were just well paid workers that was all.

“Mum, I married him because I loved him I just want to be loved in return” Nina cried.

“You’re asking for too much Nina, Cody respects you and he’s good to you, just be content with what you have, let me give you one advice, don’t fall in love, love is ill fated” Mrs. Story advised.

“Cody doesn’t respect me, if he did he wouldn’t be cheating on me” Nina blurted out.

“Cody did what?”

Mrs. Story and Mrs. Whyte sat in the living room in a grim mood, when Cody and Nina stepped in.

“Wow, I wasn’t expecting a full house” Cody remarked

“Have a seat honey” mrs. Whyte ordered. Something seemed off in the room no one welcomed him like they normally did, anytime he visited his mother’s home.

“Mom, is anything wrong?”

He asked while he settling in a couch, Nina refused to sit beside him, she rushed to her mother’s side. A maid servant walked in with some fruits and Cody was immediately distracted by her almost perfect figure. Nina observed him from afar. He’s moved by common maid servants, she thought to herself. Cody needed to be saved and she felt she was the best person to save him.

“So Cody I heard you’ve been quite adventurous for sometime now, how true is this” Mrs. Whyte inquired.

“Adventurous in what way mum?” He asked staring at Nina and then back at his mum.

“Cody don’t play dumb with me, you know exactly what I’m talking about” she yelled at her son.

“No I don’t mum”

“Nina said you have trifling around all these years”

Mrs. Story interjected.

“Nina, I thought we solved our problems, why am I being called over this issue again?” Cody scolded.

“Cody we’re going on our fifth year of being married and I’ve caught you cheating twice!” Nina responded.

“The first time I cheated I admitted my mistake and I begged you and you forgave me and we moved on, why are we bringing it up again, I’ve been doing my best to appease you since then, why will i cheat again?” Cody said visibly hurt and these two older women were buying the act.

“That day at the resort, you sneaked a girl in, she was a nurse from the hospital we went to” Nina accused him.

“No I didn’t! Nina if this is what you were thinking you could have confronted me, I did no such thing, I swear on my life” Cody defended himself, now Nina herself was falling for it.

“Are you going to keep punishing me for one mistake I made? I’ve decided to bear it but remember there’s a limit to what I can take, you attacked me with a glass the other time, but I decided to endure it, now you want to turn my mother against me” Cody sighed.

“You tried to hit him with a glass, you must’ve lost your mind Nina” Mrs. Story started to get angry with Nina. “Do you want to get sued?”

“Mrs. Story I understand her, I know what paranoia does to you, I caused this and I’m willing help us become the couple we once were” Cody pledged to Nina’s delight. He even agreed to go to therapy and counseling with her. This was a win for their marriage and her.
