Chapter 3: … Sweet until sour

Nina didn’t think she needed a prosecutor or a court hearing, this whole court procedure was wearing her out. She had already pleased guilty several times, she even turned herself in so why couldn’t they just let it go. The prosecutor stepped into her cell where Nina sat waiting. Nina looked up and saw the young man staring at her, she forced a smile as the young man took a seat. “Hello, I believe…you’re…Mrs. Whyte?” He stuttered.

“Nina, you can call me Nina” she responded and looked up at him.

“Okay, Nina my name is Jamal and I’m your prosecutor…”

“Okay, Mr. Prosecutor my name is Nina and I am guilty” she cut in “we don’t have to do all this just plead with the court to reduce my sentence that’s all I want, you can’t prove my innocence even if I was innocent my husband wouldn’t let you win”

“Your husband huh? Your husband died about a few days ago and investigations are still ongoing… he’s no longer the one pressing charges, it’s you against the state and several insurance companies now” Jamal informed her. Nina received the shock of her life.

“Cody is dead? What happened? Who killed him?” Nina queried. Jamal stared at her in confusion, didn’t she attempt to murder him? Why was she acting concerned?

“Looks like you weren’t the only one that wanted him dead” he responded.

“What happened to Cody?”

“Judging from the burns he was electrocuted and then charred by the wild flames that erupted afterwards in his room… he’s burnt beyond recognition” he announced to her.

“Cody died? How? We have children that idiot, how could he die like that?” She burst into tears.

“Mrs. Whyte”

“Nina!”

“Sorry Nina, you’re the prime suspect of many since you already set one of his properties on fire… if you don’t cooperate with me a lot of charges will be dropped against you”

“Was the fire at his place deliberate? Was someone behind it?” Nina asked while sobbing.

“Investigations show that someone deliberately set him up to end him this way” Jamal said.

“I’m not surprised, Cody is a devil, but who would do this to him?”

“This is why you have to tell me everything you know, we need to know who did this and what they were after” Jamal pleaded.

“But how can I be of help? I know nothing about this, I set his place on fire but I did it with diesel and I turned myself in” she stated.

“Can you tell me why you did it? What your reason was could give us some clues”

Nina sighed “it’s a long tiring story, you’d just listen and call me a fool”

“It’s not my duty to judge you, it’s my duty to lay facts before the court and get you sentenced, unless you were not involved in all of this” Jamal explained.

“I didn’t electrocute him, it’s not possible we were separated before I even set his property on fire, I wasn’t close enough to have messed with anything” Nina explained.

“So Nina can you tell me what you know about Cody and why you tried to kill him?” Nina sighed and Nodded.

**********************

They met in a pretty simple way nothing extraordinary. Their mothers were friends they used to play together as kids. But somewhere along the line her family moved to South Reigns. That was about the time Cody’s family’s business picked up the real estates was doing well and then Mrs. Whyte then thought it’d be beautiful to add a resort to it, she wasn’t wrong it did well too. Soon they owned some resorts, art museums and of course some estates. All they needed to do was prep their children up to inherit whatever they’d leave for them.

Cody being the eldest son felt the pressure from his parents to be perfect and lead an exemplary life. He had no chance to be a boy, he listened to whatever his parents told him tried his best to be the perfect son to the delight of Mrs. Whyte.

When Nina met Cody again they were young adults, Nina’s family wasn’t doing bad at all they operated in auto mechanics and it was booming. Nina first noticed their moms trying to pair them up but she paid no attention to

it. Cody had eyes for another woman and she had no intentions of coming between them. Mrs. Whyte soon found out about Cody’s relationship with a bartender and strongly disapproved. It only got worse when she discovered she was a pole dancer too.

“We’re nobles Cody, I forbid you to ever see that girl again” she overheard mrs. Whyte yell at Cody.

Later both mothers tried to play matchmakers for both of them, she liked Cody but she wasn’t sure how he felt about her. It wasn’t until Nina found out that the love of Cody’s life bailed on him and left the country to start a new life abroad. She had accepted a scholarship from the Whyte’s in exchange to leave Cody alone. This left Cody devastated.

Nina seized the opportunity to comfort him and Mrs. Whyte taught her all she knew to make him happy. From his favorite food, to how he liked his room kept. During their relationship Cody tried his best to be good to her, while she tried her best to be understanding. It was not until a day before the wedding that Cody’s mood changed completely, he disappeared the night before the wedding and showed up late for the ceremony, when he finally showed up he looked like he had cried and was trying his best to cover it up. He was overreacting and over doing everything Nina just thought it was weird she just knew something wasn’t right.

She was 23 when she married him and he was 25, though they weren’t too young they were fairly inexperienced and their parents dictated the pace of their relationship all they did was dance to their tune. Whenever they were in public Cody played the role of a devoted husband to the public who worshipped the ground his wife walked on. At home it was the same which was supposed to be a good thing except that it wasn’t. He wouldn’t play with her, he would stay on the phone if he wasn’t on a business trip, he wouldn’t discuss anything about himself with her. She was his wife on paper but he was obviously married to someone else. She was tired of playing the understanding wife she had to find out what Cody was up to.

That was how she found out about Belle, Cody’s lover, she was a sales agent, she had a striking resemblance to Cody’s first love the woman that got away. She lived together with Cody in one of his estates at Witting, in fact most of the time when Cody said he was on a business trip he was either on a vacation with Belle or he was with her In Witting. After learning of this she paid Belle a surprise visit to make herself known to her. Now it was at this point she realized Belle didn’t even know about her, she didn’t even know Cody had been married before and was even still married.

Nina went home to fight Cody but all she met was an apologetic Cody, he pleaded with her, he wept, he made promises. Of course she forgave him, she couldn’t blame him it was the fault of the other women.

That was her first mistake that led her on the path to bitterness.
