How could I have missed it? It was the scent in the office. I looked the man dead in the eye. He had seen me in the office. That was the only reasonable explanation for his attitude in the last hour. But back to the issue at hand, poisoning? It was a hefty accusation. One that could cost me my life and I was already thinking of ways to defend myself. He wrapped his fingers around my throat, cutting off my air supply. I clawed at his fingers and tried to get some air in. Nobody moved to help me and I was left at his mercy. “Let her go Dionyus” I heard his voice. His voice was calm but carried enough authority. The fingers around my throat didn't lose their grip. “Don't make me repeat myself Dionyus” his threatening voice echoed in the silence. Instantly, his fingers let go of my throat. I sucked in large breaths of air. “Are you going to let her go unpunished, she tried to poison me?” Dionyus asked in an angry tone. “I didn't” I felt the need to defend myself. All eyes shifted to m
I was in so much pain when I opened my eyes. My muscles ached and my back felt raw. A strangled cry left my lips and I moved. "Stay" a soft voice whispered close to my ears instantly causing my body to relax "I can't fucking believe him" I heard an angry voice say. "Let it go," the first voice said and it went silent. I didn't fall asleep again I was conscious but very weak. I heard movement around the room and whispers but i couldn't tell exactly who they were. The bed dipped as someone climbed on it and I felt gentle fingers run over my back. The minty smell of herbs filled my nose and soon I fell asleep. For the next couple of hours, I slipped in and out of consciousness but each time, there was someone in the room. The next time I woke up, I was on my back. My back didn't feel as terrible as it felt the first time I woke up. I was laying on a bed in a familiar room. The sunlight shone directly on my face. A small whimper escaped me as I tried to stand up and I heard movement o
"Dead" I shouted in surprise."Yes," he nodded with a solemn look."She has been missing since the night of the banquet according to the reports from the investigation"I remembered that she was called on the day I was whipped but she didn't show up. "We've been on the lookout for her since then. Just this morning, the guards at the border brought her body back to the pack house. She had been brutally mauled with broken bones and all. From the look of things she has been dead for four days""That means she wasn't even alive when Frost was whipped" Samantha voiced my thoughts and Xander nodded."That is why we are all convinced that it was a conspiracy. She was probably killed just to shut her up". This was getting out of hand."Somebody from the pack did it then?" Samantha asked. He shook his head "She has the scent of rogues all over her" "How does it link to Frost," Xerxes asked. Exactly what I kept asking myself. How did it link to me?I had no connection with the rogues and ther
My teeth clattered as I walked around the cold night. The cave could have been warm for me but it was too cold and dark to make the trip up there. Also the issue with the rogues, I didn't want to get hurt. Xander's revelation about the maid's death filled my head and a horrifying image of how the slave must have looked after getting mauled appeared in my head. Her death was still a mystery to me. How did she end up dead? How did she even go missing? My legs felt tired so I slumped tiredly at the side of the house wrapping my arms tightly around myself and praying to the goddess to keep me safe. And Sydney, why was she acting strange? Did something happen? No matter how hard I thought about it and wished for answers, nothing became clear. I got even more confused about everything. So I decided to stop thinking. At this point, it was causing me more harm than good. My eyes dropped from tiredness and although sleeping outside here was a bad idea, I didn't have any option. My clothes w
ALPHA ROME's POV I watched as Frost hurried away. My eyes stayed on her until she disappeared. I wanted her to turn back and look at me for one last time but she didn't. "Alpha" Xander called me and I looked at him. "Is everything okay" I nodded and he turned to leave but I stopped him. "She was trying to go to the cave a few minutes ago" his eyes widened. "Xerxes" he muttered under his breath and I shook my head. "I don't think Xerxes will make her stay out in the cold or make her sleep in the cave especially at this dangerous time" Xerxes may hate me but that hatred didn't extend to Frost. He was friendly with her. Way too friendly and it irritated my wolf and I. But the point is that he wouldn't risk her life like this. "You think something is going on?".I nodded. "She was adamant about not returning inside and sleeping at the cave. There are two things, either she's being punished or..." I trailed off not wanting to consider the second option because it had me boiling with
I was floating in space. With no sense of time or my location but I felt at peace. Absolute peace. Something I've not felt in a long while. I wanted to be here forever but that was impossible and in the next second, my eyes fluttered open. I looked around trying to make sense of my surrounding. "How are you" Samantha looked down at me, brushing her fingers gently over my forehead. "Frost. Can you hear me" she sounded worried. "I'm fine," I said but my voice came out hoarse. I was extremely tired and my muscles ached. "Are you thirsty? Hungry? I can ask the maids to get you something to eat or drink" "I'm fine. Where am I?" that felt like the most important question to ask right now. "The Alpha's room," she said and I panicked. I tried to get up and leave. It was his fault that this happened in the first place. I didn't want to be anywhere around him. "Stay still Frost" she tried to push me back to the bed but I was having none of it. "Stay Frost" his voice came from the other s
I spent the night in what I've come to know as Agnia's room. No one tried to wake me up so I slept until midday. She went about her activities and returned often even bringing me my lunch but I couldn't eat anything at the moment. I forced myself to get out of bed and take a bath while replaying everything that happened last night. I should have listened to my gut instinct. I should have never told him that Athena was involved. It was clear that he would never do anything to hurt her and now I've put myself in more danger with Athena. After my shower, there were clothes on the bed. I changed into them and Agnia came in with a smaller plate this time. My stomach grumbled and I happily accepted the meal. After eating, I wanted to take the dirty plates to the kitchen but she stopped me. "Let me do it," I said but she already had the plates in her hand. "You should get as much rest as you can get. Don't bother yourself with this" her voice was comforting and I could also detect pity. S
On the second day, I managed to clean most of the house until only two rooms remained. I couldn't complete the rooms today because I was already exhausted. I stopped at Samantha's house but it was locked. I decided to return to the pack house. As I was entering the building, I noticed Athena coming out. I retraced my steps and hid behind a tree. She exited the building with two men who she seemed over-friendly with. A third man walked out of the house and I recognized Dionyus instantly. He shared a laugh and a hug with Athena before they continued, walking away. A thought crossed my mind. Could Athena have something to do with the incident that night of the banquet and the murder of the girl? It could be possible. I needed to speak to Xerxes or Xander since the king was out of the option. Athena was dangerous if she truly had something to do with the murder of the girl. When I was sure they've moved away, I came out from the spot and entered the building. This was the second time I h
