Meeting an old friend

Catherine’s POV

My lips curved with a smile, as I fiddled with my wedding ring, while thinking about the fact that in a week, Alessandro and I would have been married for a week.

A knock then came on the door, pulling me out of my blissful reverie.

Steering my attention from my ring, I said. “Come in, the door is unlocked.”

A young, female nurse walked in. “Good afternoon, Dr Williams. The pediatric patient has regained consciousness.”

“Very well then,” I said, standing up. “I'm coming with you. Let's go.”

On reaching the pediatric ward, I saw my patient, a seven year old girl who had suffered a skull bruise, after slipping and falling on a wet, tiled floor.

According to her mother, she was playing with her elder brother and they hadn't noticed the splooge of water on the floor, and were running around the house.

“Hi, sweetie,” I said, retracting her folder from the bedside table. “How are you feeling?”

“My head hurts,” She drawled. “And I'm hungry. Where is my mummy?”
