“Who is Jake?”
“What?” Bella asks, pulling away from embracing his body. Her relief at him being okay gives way to confusion over his abrupt change of topic.
“Jake.” Adam repeats the name like it should mean something to her. Is he talking about Jake Johnson, who she mentioned having a crush on? “The actor from-”
“No. With Lumi. You both spoke of a man named Jake that you claimed to be in love with. Was it the actor from last night or a different Jake? Because you claimed to be in love with him as well.”

Apparently, they had seen Bella has encroaching on their territory or something because they had attacked. Brutally. The girls and Bella had physical education that morning and the coach decided that making them run laps in the hot eighty-six-degree sun had been the way to go. So Bella had put on her PE uniform, the black shorts and the white tee shirt. Setting off on her laps, she was soon swarmed by the girls who got behind her and kept stepping on the backs of her shoes, trying to trip her. Spurred on, she ran as hard and fast as she could to get away from them, exerting herself to the point of exhaustion. At one point the girls caught up to her and messed with her some more, which resulted in her tripping and falling, scraping her knees and palms on the asphalt.

Well, that went well. Adam smacks the kitchen counter angrily as he swears. “Damn it!” Adam had not meant to act like an ass and anger her. He had just let his stupid jealousy get the better of him. Then when he had felt such a monumental sense of relief at Jake being a fictional character, he had tried to hide it by making an off-hand comment. He had no way of knowing that it would set her off and he still did not fully understand the blazing anger she had directed at him, but he still felt bad for setting her off.

Bella was dressed and sitting on the bed, waiting for Adam to come in with the food. She had agreed to have supper with him, confused by the question. They had just eaten breakfast together when he had asked, so she was not sure why he was treating that meal differently. She had wanted to ask Lumi earlier when he had come in for just a moment to give her a hug, but he had left quickly, telling her that Adam was sending him and Cole on a mission. Chad had come in and hung out with her for a while, playing Minecraft on the Xbox with her for about an hour, but she knew a seven-year-old was not likely to have the answers she sought.

The room is huge. Royal blue and cream colors are offset by the dark wood and the gold. The large arched windows line the far wall, offering a look out at the dark trees surrounding the house. In the middle of the room is a large wooden table with what seems like a hundred chairs around it, but is really only fourteen chairs. Six on each side and one at each end. Adam woke her up and told her to get dressed, so Bella is now tugging on a pair of black yoga pants and an old faded t-shirt that she has. It is one of her favorites. It depicts Michael Myers holding a knife and beneath it, in a bloody text it says “A real man will chase you”. Adam's lips crook up at the corners when she opens the door and finds him on the other side. “Nice shirt.”Bella rolls her eyes and laughs. “So, I am dressed. Bella was in the kitchen making herself a peppermint tea and Chad a glass of hot chocolate when she heard the commotion. The sound of doors slamming and stomping feet. Bella is worried but trying not to show it. Adam has her tasked with distracting Chad. She figures that it has something to do with the fact that Mr. Potter was expected home hours ago. Adam watches Bella as he says the words. He watches as they register with her, as they sink in. But he does not see surprise in her eyes, as if she had already known what he was. What kills him is seeing the fear in her eyes. He hates that she is scared of him again when he had tried so hard to let him see the softer side of him. Adam had tried to erase the fear that he had first inspired in her. Although, he would rather see fear than repulsion. Adam had always known that Bella would have to be told what he was.
