Adam watches Bella as he says the words. He watches as they register with her, as they sink in. But he does not see surprise in her eyes, as if she had already known what he was. What kills him is seeing the fear in her eyes.

Bella is sound asleep, once again lying less than five feet away. Only this time she feels so much further away.
