A Dagger At Heart

Author's Pov

Freya opened the curtains of his room before smiling at the place being fully tidy, she had developed this stubborn habit of cleaning his room every day, settling his stuff, and maintaining his wardrobe. She didn't want anything to look abandoned when he would return to his homeland.

Leonard had spent a decade in a strange country with no one at his aid, she wanted him to feel at home and wanted him to see how she took care of everything like her own. Soon her head snapped to the door finding her aunt smiling at her.

"Freya, are you done here?" She nodded her head letting out a sigh of contentment when her aunt patted her head like a mother.

"You know you don't have to do this every day, we have servants for this." Freya smiled shyly.

"I just like doing his work." Her aunt Sofia chuckled staring at her blushing daughter with a teasing smile.

"My son is really lucky," She exclaimed proudly caressing Freya's flushed cheek.

"I wish your uncle had given you permission to talk with him but no worries just one week more then you both will have a whole life to talk." Freya smiled assuring her.

"I know aunt and I am not even worried about that," She informed the tensed woman before they both decided to resume their work.

Freya sighed lowly when she remembered Evan, she promised to meet him at the cafe today but seems like she had to create a little distance between them from now on, her uncle never demanded much from her but whenever he asked her to follow something it always proved to be favorable for her. So she decided to discuss this with Evan and made him understand her position.

She had seen Ajax, her uncle being extremely possessive of his wife, sometimes her aunt even had to hold him closer to assure him that she was his and belonged to him whenever any other man tried interacting with her. She had heard the depth of possessiveness this family's men held for their spouses and sometimes this much obsessive behavior dreaded Freya.

She just prayed for Leo to be a little understanding and not be worst than his father, sometimes she also wished to talk with him, share her life and tell him about how much she loves him for over a decade but her uncle had forbidden her in clear words that he didn't want Leonard to have any distraction from his studies.

He did permit her to talk to Leonard a year ago when he passed his high studies and started handling Steve's overseas business enterprises Freya happily tried contacting him but to her disappointment, her uncle said Leonard was extremely busy with his life and if he got any time to contact her he would do it himself.

She waited and waited for his call, text, or even a mention of her in his verbal interviews but no, nothing. A year skipped but she got not even a single piece of news from his side. Leonard never did video interviews or appeared in any magazines instead he kept his identity hidden and all his interviews were in a written form yet she couldn't help but stalk him.

Freya had no social media account that's why she only stalked him through magazines, she wasn't allowed to contact any outside people. Her phone didn't even have a F******k feature as her uncle didn't like this stuff. She was only allowed to use the phone for call or message purposes but it never bothered her or felt suffocating to her.

She was used to this and the addition to it she herself never liked trying to browse anything on social media. She liked staying out of trouble and living in her own small peaceful space, she had only three purposes in life,

To make her uncle and aunt happy no matter what she had to do for that.

To follow her God's teaching and pray regularly.

And to devote her love, passion, and purity to her Leo, her fiance, her love.

Evan was also a part of her life but her purpose related to him was to only be a loyal and compassionate friend to him, he had supported her a lot in the past few years and she wanted to give him a helping hand of comfort in every path of her life.

Finally finishing her chores she took a cup of tea and decided to sit in the garden to relax a bit, she also had to apologize to Evan for not being able to meet him today. Placing the cup on the bench she pulled her phone out and dialed his number.

"Hello princess," A small smile instantly pulled over her lips at his endearment.

"Hey Evan, I am sorry I couldn't come today." She apologized hearing a small chuckle from the other side.

"Princess relax it's not a big deal, but tell me what's the matter? Did I do something to make you upset?" Her face fell upon hearing his words, how will she ever maintain a distance from him when he meant to her so much?

"No Evan you didn't, I just have something important to discuss with you, how about we meet at the church." Evan accepted her offer and they both talked for a bit before Evan excused himself.

Placing the phone on her lap she grabbed the tea cup staring at the garden grass with sad eyes, "Don't be sad," She flinched turning her head to her aunt who smiled taking a seat beside her.

"Ajax is quite strict in these matters but I am sure my Leo would be a little different after all he had spent his whole life overseas. He must be broad minded not like Ajax." Sofia tried to comfort Freya who sadly smiled at her.

"Uncle also went overseas, but he didn't change." She reminded the woman who sighed looking at the beautiful flowers.

"You're right but not everyone is the same, maybe Leo would be different. So, don't worry just think positive." And this is what always brought a blissful smile over Freya's lips, her aunt never let any negative thoughts grace her mind.

"Thank you." Sofia smiled nodding her head.

Three days swept away and tomorrow Freya had to go and meet Evan, she had been preparing herself for what she will tell him and how! But she also knew eventually she had to build a little wall between their friendship after all she always knew about the possessiveness of this family's men and she agreed to marry the son of Steve with her whole will.

"Aunt this is the list of groceries, I have ma---" She abruptly stilled on the spot when her eyes fell over two unknown figures standing in the hallway of the mention.

Her breath hitched the moment her bright blue eyes collided with the familiar dark amber ones, the list of groceries slipped away from her hand as her eyes widened in astonishment. Everything seemed to be wiped away from her surroundings but him, she couldn't think or look at anything else except him. He was supposed to arrive three days later than how?

Leonard Steve, her fiance, the man she waited a decade for was standing in front of her staring at her with nothing, his deep emotionless eyes matched her shocked ones but not even a single emotion flashed in them. There was no softness, happiness, or even the slightest sense of longing in them for her.

He looked stiff and unbothered.

"Freya," Her trance broke as she blinked multiple times turning her head to her uncle who called her name.

She gulped again glancing at the tall man and then finally her eyes decided to acknowledge another new face standing there, beside her fiance, way closer than for her liking. Her heart vigorously thumped against her chest as she stared at the duo.

"Wouldn't you greet them?" Her uncle again interrupted her train of thought and this time her eyes met her aunt's who looked unusually sad and disappointed.

She wasn't even looking at Freya anymore which made her heart race in discomfort. Looking at her uncle she gulped not having any confidence to glance at her intimidating fiance who was still drilling holes in her face.

"I'll go and bring coffee," With that nervousness took over her, and grabbing the grocery list from the floor she stumbled back to the kitchen but before she could disappear from their sights she heard something which hit her heart.

"Who was that mannerless girl, dad?" Mannerless? He called her mannerless and asked who was she. How could he forget her?

She recognized him in a blink of an eye even if they were meeting after 10 years then how could he forget her? She was his fiance for a decade and he didn't even remember her face? Suddenly she shook her head reminding herself to think positively.

Maybe just like her he never got a chance to see her face, maybe she had changed a lot in these 10 years that's why he couldn't recognize her, maybe because he thought she was a stranger he didn't show any emotions. Yes, that must be the reason otherwise he would have hugged her the same way he used to.

Relaxing her heart and building up courage she grabbed the tray of coffee cups and walked back to the living room, she took a deep breath and the moment her feet entered the room she heard something vicious, something heartbreaking, something which broke her beyond measure.

"Dad, I already told you that was an engagement of my childhood, I don't believe in it, and above all that," He paused for a second giving another wave of hurt to Freya when he slid his calloused hand in the girl's hand that was sitting beside him, showing their intertwined hands to his father he continued.

"Meet Janet, my girlfriend."

Just those two words in the end that he uttered were enough to drain Freya's energy, the tray dropped off her hands colliding with the floor making a loud crashing sound and earning everyone's attention. Tears stung her eyes staring at the man with horror and parted lips who finally looked at her but again she saw nothing in his eyes.

He was still looking at her with no emotion, no softness, and no compassion. The care his eyes showed when he looked at his girlfriend was nowhere to be seen when those amber orbs met with her watery blue ones. Her aunt instantly ran to her side holding her up as she felt like her legs were becoming lifeless.

Ten years! She waited for this man for ten years! She waited for his love, his embrace, his presence to be hers solely not for this. She didn't wait for so long only for him to replace her, to break her apart like this, to give her place to someone else.

Her uncle also stood up followed by the duo as well, she looked at Ajax but he was staring at the floor being in deep thought, she wanted him to tell her that his son was bluffing, everything he told her was the truth and this was a lie. She waited ten years for Leo trusting her uncle's words he had to assure her.

"And I want to end this engagement right now."

Another stroke to her heart and that was enough to drain away her senses, he couldn't do this to her. Her Leo was never this heartless, this uncompassionate, he was never this ruthless. He couldn't break her this badly right?

But he did, he eventually did.

___________________________________

What do you think, how Freya will accept this new information? Will she be able to accept ending the engagement?

Also, many of you might be that she should work and not let her uncle control her and all, but to remind everyone. The Steve family's men are extremely controlling and conservative. It might be sometimes come intolerable but trust me we do have such families and men in reality too and some women who willingly want to live like that.
