Sarah gulped as soon as his scent invaded her nostrils. It was so inebriating that she almost lost her senses. It couldn't be the wine, because she hadn't drunk that much.Victor, on the other hand, was slightly drunk. She could tell by the way his cheeks were flushed and his eyes were fixed on her lips while he spoke."You confuse me, because I don't know why I can't stop thinking about you so much," he confessed.Sarah blinked, trying to understand what he was saying. If he was drunk, he could be just saying nonsense. She shouldn't take it seriously, because he was probably not going to remember it the next day."And to be honest with you, I never cared about any women before. I actually hate them. You… I don't know," he continued, struggling a bit to find the right words. "But I won't talk to you about this, because I'll only give you more reason to hate me."But she did want to know about it. Since their conversation in the kitchen, she was more than eager to hear his explanation.
It took Sarah a few seconds to realize that the kiss was actually happening, and wasn't just a figment of her imagination. She was having an internal conflict, because while her head was telling her to retreat and get away from him, her heart and whole body told her otherwise. She didn't want to do it. In fact, she wanted to get even closer, if that was even possible.Victor had his hands around her waist, pulling her towards him and there wasn't any space left between them. Giving up on debating with herself, Sarah decided to just accept that maybe fate gave her a tiny moment of happiness. She had never felt like that before with anyone, so she assumed it was worth the risk. She didn't want to think about the consequences and just enjoy the moment, so she lifted her arms and put them around his neck, pulling his head closer to her.The scent he exuded, the feelings he provoked on her body, the taste of his lips on hers; none of that passed unnoticed to Sarah. She wasn't expecting he
Sarah's leg failed and she collapsed on the grass, since Victor wasn't able to see it coming. He took her by her arms and put her on her feet again, but she was very sure that she would fall again if he loosened his grip."Sarah, are you okay?" She heard his voice asking, but her mind was miles away from there. The only thought inside her head was that she couldn't lose her Nana, not now."I… I'll be there as soon as possible. Thank you," she mumbled over the phone, not even giving herself the trouble to turn off the call."Sarah?" Victor's voice called one more time, and this time, she managed to see his honey-colored eyes in front of her. If she was lucid and not worried about her grandmother, she would definitely blush.Victor's brows were frowned and he didn't let go of her arms, not even for a second. He guided her to a wood bench under the nearest tree and asked one of the staff from the horse stable to bring her some water. The man came running a few minutes later and handed her
The news about the hospital receiving an enormous donation spread like wildfire. Sarah didn't know if it was coincidental or not, but the doctor informed her that a few urgent surgeries were going to be done with no charge for the patient, since the hospital board allowed them to use a share of the money from the donation. She didn't want to interrogate the doctor about it, but she couldn't believe how lucky she and Nana were. Mrs. Johnson was on the list of the patients who were going to be assisted, and Sarah cried her eyes out when she heard about it."Nana, can you believe it? You're finally going to be better," she said, hugging her grandmother cautiously. The old woman was still lying on the bed, unable to make big moves since there were a lot of wires and medical tools attached to her arm and chest. She smiled at Sarah and squeezed her hand in a sign of gratitude. She was still very weak and the doctor asked her not to do any effort and especially not to speak."Anyway, I'll ask
Nana's surgery was scheduled and realized earlier than Sarah was expecting. On the next day, her grandmother was already doing the exams necessary and two days later, she went through the procedure.Sarah thought that her heart was going to come out of her mouth with such nervousness she felt while her Nana was inside that room, and all sorts of thoughts crossed her mind. She couldn't help but think that she didn't want to go through all of that by herself and the first person that came into her mind was Victor. She just wanted to feel his arms around her again, embracing and comforting her and telling her that everything would be alright. The surgery lasted a few hours and when she was about to get up and ask one of the hospital staff if everything was ok, she saw the doctor coming in her direction with a satisfactory expression on his face."Everything went perfectly well, Miss Johnson. We're very optimistic with her recovery. She is still sleeping because of the sedative, but we'll
A couple more days passed and Sarah's grandmother was finally discharged from the hospital. She would still receive her treatment in the nursing home and she had to make visits to her doctor every once in a while for a few weeks, but the worse had definitely passed.Sarah called a cab that afternoon and took her grandma back to the nursing home and stood there until late at night, only leaving after Nana fell asleep, with a promise to come back as soon as possible. It had been a while since she had been at the mansion and taking care of Ben, so she couldn't exploit Mr. Reed's kindness anymore. She would go back to work and visit her grandmother whenever she had some free time. Since everything was alright now, she had no more reasons to be worried.Arriving at the mansion, Sarah noticed that most of the rooms had the lights off, which meant that everyone was probably already sleeping. There was only one place with the lights still on, the living room. She pondered if she should go ther
Sarah cried until she fell asleep that night. She had no idea of why Victor was doing that to her; kissing her whenever he felt like it, visiting her and Nana in the hospital, but that couldn't end well. She knew her place, and it wasn't by his side. Society didn't work that way. She was only allowing herself to dream, but the pain inside her heart was not easy to ignore. She couldn't bear being left by him in the future if she allowed their situation to go any further. So it was better that she stopped it now, before it even started. It was hard to know if he really meant everything he said. The fact that he wasn't able to take her out of his mind didn't mean he was in love with her though, or that he was willing to face everything and everyone just to be with her. It could just be the excitement of winning a woman. As far as she knew, she could be an adventure or even a challenge for him. Who knew? But she wasn't willing to risk everything, especially having her heart broken, so stay
She spent the whole way back home trying to convince herself that she wasn't being a b*tch by using someone else to forget Victor. Unfortunately, she wasn't being successful. But in order to move on with her life, she had to start embracing the opportunities that fate threw her way. And Oliver did seem like someone she would have interest in, if Victor hadn't appeared in her life first.A few days passed without her seeing a sign of Victor at home. Whenever she went downstairs with Benjamin to have breakfast, lunch or dinner, the staff would say that Victor wasn't at home or that he was busy at the office and asked not to be disturbed. It was pretty clear to Sarah that he was avoiding her, even though she didn't know his real motives for that. Was he mad at her? Or maybe embarrassed? Either way, she didn't want to know. She asked him to stop chasing her for whatever reason he had, so now she couldn't go after him asking him why he was avoiding her."Here, Ben. Eat everything, alright?"
