Chapter 2

Before my parents disappeared, they told me the story of how they believe the war began. It wasn’t a pretty story; in fact, it was downright the most jacked up romance story I had ever heard. Genetics can truly be a bitch sometimes, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

It first started with the vampires and the werewolves. It’s not very common for a wolf to have a vamp mate. The reason it’s so uncommon is because if one drop of vamp blood enters the werewolves body said wolf is instantly dead. This is the same for vamps, one drop and they die. Well, it just so happened that fate had a sense of humor. Fate had paired one of the royal wolves with the daughter of the vamps president.

This of course did not go over well. Both parties were worried the royal children would lose control and mark each other, resulting in the death of both. It’s been said that when wolves and vampires find their mate their immediate response is to mark and mate. The marking usually happens during the mating, and apparently their wolves have this instinct to mark their mate. It’s supposed to be near impossible to resist, so it was understandable where the worry was coming from.

No matter how much they tried to convince the wolf prince what a horrible idea it was to pursue her, he would hear nothing of it. After all that was his mate; his destined other half. He wouldn’t give her up for anything, not even his own life. He also vowed that he would never risk her life.

Over the years the wolves and the vamps had learned that nothing they said would make a difference, and eventually found some common ground and became friends. They had become close friends over time and often had parties together, and they confided in each other.

Unsurprisingly, that camaraderie didn’t last long.

During one particularly steamy session with his mate, the prince lost control of his wolf for just a moment and did the most natural thing a wolf can do to their mate. He was warned several times to resist his wolf, but it only took him one slip, one single moment of weakness, to make that fatal mistake. He marked her.

The big problem with that is when you mark your mate you end up swallowing some of their blood. Obviously, this was a bad thing because that one drop killed the prince instantly. His mate was in so much pain and grief that she ended up taking a drop of his blood to kill herself.

This actually happens pretty often with mated couples. When one dies it leaves the other empty, soulless. They often can’t go on alone, and if they do manage to stay alive they aren’t the same person. They are literally dead on the inside; because of that it often drives the person mad. They become irrational and extremely violent.

The vamps were devastated with the loss. Their future leader had taken her own life. They blamed the wolves for their beloved daughter’s death, saying that they knew that he wouldn’t be able to control himself, so in the end it was their fault she died. If they would’ve taught their son more self-control or, better yet, kept him away from their daughter, then she and he both would still be alive.

The wolves grew tired of being falsely accused by the vamps. It wasn’t their fault as a whole; the prince and the prince alone was where the fault lied. They couldn’t really blame the wolves as a race for her death because it was his own fault for his lapse in control.

Over the next several years the wolves tried to find a way to break through to the vampires, but nothing seemed to be working. They refused to sit in the same room, yet alone talk civilly. The wolves finally had enough of constantly being attacked, both verbally and physically. So they gathered all of their fighters and officially declared war on the vamps. This marked the beginning of the werewolf and vampire war. The war that is still going on today.

There have always been royal families in each and every species. The wolves have their Royals, the vampires have their President, the witches had the head of the coven, and the Fae had their Imperials. The point being, the royalty are in charge; they decided everybody’s fate. It was them who decided to come out to the humans.

True to human nature, they were scared. Humans were taught to fear the unknown, and we were definitely unknown to them. In all fairness they had every right to be scared. We were stronger, faster, and some of us could control nature. Why wouldn’t they be afraid of someone that could kill them with a flick of their hand?

We never really integrated very well with them. For most of them their fear overrode the rest of their emotions causing them to hate us. Not long after we came out to the world, the humans formed a group called The Hunt. The Hunt was dedicated to killing all supernaturals, saying that we were unnatural demons who needed to be extinguished.

The first group they went after were the witches. The witches were the easiest species to get rid of since they were basically human. They didn’t have magic wands, hands, or pinkies. The witches believed in making their own magic. They had books that were passed down from generations, teaching them to make potions. They read directions out of a book, mixed some things together, said a few words, and poof the outcome is a potion. They had no sort of immediate defense once their potions were gone because they had to prepare them days in advance.

It wasn’t like the movies where you could wave a wand, mutter a few words, and have instant results. No, it was more like potions and caldrons and praying you have the right potions you’d need when you’re attacked. Once they were out of their potions they had to use hand to hand combat. Now don’t get me wrong, they were extremely efficient in combat, but when they went against The Hunt they stood no chance. The Hunt was more advanced in fighting than almost any other species. Some of them could even hold their own in a fight with a vamp or a wolf.

This obviously made them an easy first target. Once their potions were used they had no solid defense. Not to mention the fourteenth to sixteenth witch hunts knocked out the majority of the witches. The last remaining witches either got hunted down or went into hiding. If they went into hiding they had to have some damn good hiding spots because they have yet to emerge.

The wolves and the vamps obviously were at an advantage in this war. They had the super strength, speed, shifting, plus many other advantages over the other species. Once they learned of the witches being wiped out, they started getting scared of The Hunt. That saying, “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” would apply here. They saw a common threat and temporarily worked together; taking it upon themselves to eliminate the biggest threat. The wolves only wanted to kill The Hunt, but the vamps wanted to kill all humans.

Once The Hunt was killed, the wolves stepped back. They had done what they set out to do while the vamps continued killing. It didn’t take them long to have the vast majority of the humans either extinguished or placed in huge breeding facilities. The wolves got tired of the mass murdering and started the war back up between them.

It quickly became a race to the humans. The vamps took several thousand humans hostage for the intent to breed them for their food. The wolves took several hundred under their wing, giving them a job as servants. The remaining humans scattered, roaming the country in small groups.

Once the threat of The Hunt was gone things were relatively peaceful for a while. The werewolves and the vamps went back to hating each other, but hadn’t waged any full on attacks again. The only supernaturals left were the vamps, the wolves, and the Fae.

The Fae were as usual, at war with each other. The Seelie vs. the Unseelie. This was a normal every day thing. For thousands of years we have been at war with each other. The Unseelie were finally getting tired of the battles and wanted to win the war, so they went to the vamps for help.

The Seelie court knew that if they didn’t get help they would soon be extinct. It was decided that they would unite with the wolves.

And as the saying goes, the rest is history.
