Chapter 4 A Price For a Life.

Vida's POV.

The world seems to become unstable the moment he blocks my path with his hands.

At first, I tremble from his intimidating aura. Desperate to escape, I do my best to defend myself and clear my name but this stubborn man won't budge.

"Mate?!" He whispers, staring at me with eyes that yearn.

Whatever he means is not my problem, I'm done with werewolves.

"Look here mister, you can't threaten me for your careless mistake," I warn him as I slouch backwards, careful not to be too close.

Everything about this man screams danger, let's not mention his muscular hands look like they'll break me with one grip.

My eyes wander to the man behind him and I can't help but feel sorry as I watch the man crawl upwards with his elbow.

This man is no joke.

'Does he want to kill me? Would he force me to have his child?' I'm beyond confused as I wonder deeply about what could be going on in his mind.

"Joe," he calls out to his bodyguard who barely manages to get up on his feet.

With a cough, he rises, unwilling to look weak before me despite being tossed to the floor barely five minutes ago. "Yes, Alpha!"

"Get out," the Alpha orders, and with his head bowed, he limps his way out of the room, holding onto his shoulder as if it was broken.

The Alpha and I remain alone in this room and I tremble from knowing that anything could go wrong.

Just then, as if he senses my fear, he reaches towards the door, taking hold of the key and locking us both in.

"What are you doing?" I ask frightened as I put some distance between us.

Turning a deaf ear to my question he walks towards a chair sitting at a corner and drags it towards the door as he sits.

Now I can't leave the room unless he wants me to.

His legs crossed, chest up as he locked his fingers together and stared at me.

Gulp!

"Please, you've got it all wrong, it wasn't me, I would never steal from anyone," I say to him.

His face is stone cold as he stares at me almost as if I speak gibberish, and it begins to tick me off, but most importantly, I need to leave this place before I can act.

"If you want, I can take you to the person you're looking for," I tell him but again he just stares at me.

Just why isn't he saying anything?

Slightly tilting his head he snickers and questions, "So you gave your ex all of your details while you two were still dating?"

For some reason, I feel stupid about answering that question, maybe because I'm just realizing I've been acting stupid while I was crazy in love.

"Yes, I was a fool to think that we were heading somewhere with our relationship," I told him.

Tears hang in my eyes as I lower my head feeling nothing but despair over my foolishness, however, I cannot bring myself to hate him.

Just thinking of the years I've spent loving him, I can't hate him just like that with my memories still functioning.

"Here, dry your tears."

A white handkerchief appears under my face and I raise my head.

I didn't even notice when he came towards me.

Still, I reach out for the handkerchief and dab my already fallen stream of tears dry.

"Look it was my ex, and we just broke up cause I found out that he was cheating on me, I know I may have made some mistakes in the past which may have contributed to you being frauded but please believe me, sir, I'm not in this with him."

The man sighs deeply, caressing his temple as he mutters some words to himself.

"It's Dexter…" he says.

Confused, I ask, "Excuse me?"

"My name, it's Dexter, stop calling me sir," Dexter says as he makes his way back to his seat.

For a small period, the room falls into a dead silence; one could hear a pin drop.

"Whatever it is, I've already paid the price for a Miss Vida so you have to do what you should, even if you take this to the police I won't be held accountable, you would," the stubborn man insists.

"But…"

"I can't find who signed, I don't know what he looks like, so I can't hold him responsible, the only thing I'm sure of, is everything that concerns you," he tells me.

d*mnit!

I can't stand his arrogance and inhumane nature.

How can he still not understand me? What on earth does he want from me?

Enraged, I hurry towards him, my hands together as I frankly tell him, "Then I'm afraid I can't help you, like I keep saying it's not my fault, what else do you want from me?"

Dexter goes silent, his eyes trail my body from head to toe sending shivers down my spine as he scoffs, almost as if he were staring in amusement at something hilarious.

Eek I itch to wipe that smugness off his face and send him far away, unfortunately, his intimidating looks scare me more than anything.

"Alright then," adjusting himself properly into his seat, he reaches out towards me, his hand open, "Pay up."

"What?" It feels like I'm about to be robbed as I frown in anger.

"Pay back the money I gave for the surrogacy."

This man doesn't look like he's joking with that look on his face, and I have to agree that it's the best way to settle this dilemma at the moment.

Sighing heavily, "How much is it?" I ask, but then he smirks, giving me goosebumps from an obnoxious feeling.

Dipping his hand into his pocket he takes out his phone and scrolls through it, allowing me to see his debit alert.

My eyes widen and I step back with my jaw wide open.

"What?! I can't pay back such an amount," I yell loudly.

Besides that, I couldn't help but notice how much he has in his account which brings me to wonder…

How rich is this Alpha, and why can't he just let that amount go with the money he has left, it barely looks like his account has been scratched.

"Well then you're going to have my child," he chuckles, retrieving his phone.

"No!"

"No?" Dexter questions back.

The air around me feels like ice and it becomes difficult to breathe from Dexter's pressure. My legs tremble and I'm forced to lower my head, avoiding direct eye contact.

"Please…"

"I need time, I already have someone I need my savings for, my grandmother is in the hospital and she needs immediate surgery, please, just give me some time."

"Oh….! And do you have the money for treatment?"

"..."

Without knowing how to respond I remain quiet. He's hit the nail right on the head with that question.

"Poor and pathetic, to think you would be asking for time when you're jobless and in need of money."

Overwhelmed with embarr*ssment I freeze as all his words are true and I have no way to refute them.

Holding back my irritation I answer calmly, "I'll try, I'll think of something, or get a job or something."

Excuses, I know my words sound nothing lesser than excuses but I still say them despite knowing I can't afford such.

Deep within me, I try my best to mentally prepare for the challenges I'm about to face when Dexter rises and walks towards me.

His steps like an elephant have the room quake and me stepping backwards avoiding his eyes out of fear.

"I can help you if you want."

At once I raise my head, staring in disbelief at those words of hope uttered from his lips.

Can he help me? Really?

"How?!" I yell loudly holding onto his collar without realizing it.

Just then, he holds on to my arms on his collar, and although I try to let go, he has his left hand tightly gripped upon mine and he uses the other to reach out to my chin, raising my head and forcing me to look him in the eyes.

"One night, let's have s*x for one night, and I'll settle your grandmother's hospital bill."
