As Maddox and Mrs Carter left the kitchen, leaving me alone with her, I turned around to look at her. She sat with her palms wrapped around her coffee mug. Her profile was to me as she glared down at her coffee like somehow that caffeinated drink had offended her.

I sat down on the stool beside her and shifted. My mind replayed the words Maddox had said to me. He wasn’t the one who had taken care of me last night when he had brought me home, which made it clear who was. And it also highlight
