Chapter 7: Her mission.

Mabel woke up the next morning to the sound of someone banging on her door. She groaned in annoyance as she had barely gotten any sleep due to her trying to clear the dust from her room.

"Wake up, you fat pig," she heard her half-sister's voice, and this just urged her to continue her sleep.

"Fine, I'll go tell Dad that you refused to see him after he called you," she heard Kendra say, and this was effective in getting Mabel up.

She jumped off her bed and opened the door to find an annoyed Kendra at her door. "You fat pig, do you know how long I've been at the door?!"

"Less than three minutes," Mabel rolled her eyes at her overly dramatic sister.

"Wow, someone seems to have grown some guts after spending time away from us," Kendra sneered and she dragged Mabel by her hair. The latter was left helpless as if she touched Kendra, her father and stepmother wouldn't spare her.

"Just because you managed to get into that prestigious college and graduate top of your class doesn't change the fact that you're a bastard who has been leeching off this family's niceness for years," Kendra growled.

'To hell with their niceness!' Mabel yelled inwardly. All the days she had spent with them were torture for her.

"Let go of her, Kendra. I'll handle it," came the sudden voice of Kelvin and Mabel felt her blood go cold. She didn't want to be left alone with him after what he had repeatedly done to her.

She would rather stay with Kendra than Kelvin as he was the cruelest one of the two siblings.

"I'll go meet Dad as he is calling me," she told them and like lightning, she ran away from there as fast as she could.

Mabel looked back continuously to make sure she wasn't being followed and it made her bump into someone who turned out to be her father.

"I'm sorry, dad," she quickly apologized while also closing her eyes, anticipating him to hit her.

"Useless," Anthony inhaled sharply. "Follow me!" He then ordered Mabel and she did as he told her. He walked to his study and she followed quietly.

When she entered, he closed the door and went to look at his desk. "Go through this," he said, picking up a file and tossing it to her.

Mabel caught it and then opened it to read. According to what she was looking at, her father or whoever he sent to do the job, had applied to the Romero's company to work as an intern. The company seemed to be reputable so why was her father trying to get her into it when he didn’t care about her?

"I know you're asking yourself why I applied there for you and I really hope you’re not thinking I’m doing this because I love you. I do not give a shit about you,” Anthony said and even though Mabel knew it, it still hurt to hear her father’s words.

“I did so because this move is good for the family especially as no one knows who you are. You will infiltrate their company and get intel," Anthony explained.

And he was right. After her mom gave birth to her, she gave her maiden name instead of her father's name to her, something Anthony didn't bother to change as he didn't accept her.

The door opened and Kelvin walked into the room like a king as he took his seat on the couch in the room.

What her father was asking her to do was both morally and legally wrong but she didn't have the guts to speak up.

"I want you to work there as an intern so you can get Intel about their company and give it to us. Being in the company will give you access to a lot of things. All of which you will share with Kelvin or me," her father stated and Mabel clenched her fist.

"And that's not all you have to do to help this family take down the Romeros," Anthony continued. "I don't care how you want to do it but you must make Christian Romero fall for you so we can use it to bring him down!"

"F-father," Mabel finally spoke up. Stealing company secrets she would try to do but she didn't want to stoop so low to break the heart of whoever the man in question was.

"I-I don't think I'm capable of making him fall in love with me," she spoke out. "I don't have the looks to pull it off." Kendra had always called her ugly after all so why was he sending her instead of his beloved daughter who was the prettier one?

"All I hear are excuses and excuses…"

"... are just words for failure and I must not fail or else I will regret it," Mabel completed the words of Anthony as it was something that he had made sure was engraved in her mind.

"Should you fail to make Christian fall for you, then your grandparents’ death will be on you," Anthony told her and Mabel’s eyes widened in horror.

Her mother’s parents were the only people she considered family as they had tried their best to protect her from her family.

If something happened to them all because of her, then she would never be able to forgive herself because knowing her father, she knew it wasn’t an empty threat. He had the power to kill her grandparents and make it look like an accident.

“Don’t harm them, I’ll do as you want,” Mabel assured her father.

“That’s more like it. Your acceptance email should be coming in anytime soon and you'll start work immediately,” Anthony informed her.

“You will report your progress to Kelvin. I want a weekly report of how it’s going,” Anthony instructed her.

“Also, begin to pack your bags. You’re moving to another house, one that will make your story more believable.”

“Well don’t just stand there, get a move on,” Kelvin snapped his fingers when she didn't move and Mabel immediately left the room.

“Do you think she’ll be able to do it?” Kelvin asked his father after they were alone.

“Of course not. All we need to do is to let her think she can and then expose her anonymously to Christian. Knowing how he hates betrayal, he’ll kill her and I’ll swoop in to bring him down for killing a family member,” Anthony said with an evil smile on his face.
