"When I was young I thought that money was the most important thing in life, now that I am old I know that it is."

"How is everything? I want to make sure all the preparations go as I asked. Don't try to alter anything without my permission, do you understand?"
Vian went back and forth on her phone between different calls with the event organizer whom they had assigned to take care of the family party. It was their annual family gathering that was held at the end of the year.
It was a mix celebration for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Because her family was a prestigious family in the city, they always became the party host each year. Besides family member, there would also be a few close family friends and some whale business partners invited. Of course, if they could kill three birds with one stone they would definitely do it. They were after all, the Sterling.
Their family history had always been quite complex. Her family, The Sterling is a well-known upper class family in Houston. They came from old money and have remained in the high society since her great grandfather time who immigrated from England to the United States during the first world war.
He was the youngest child of five siblings and went through hardships his entire life until he started his own family business but it was not until his grandfather’s time did the family actually gained an abundance of wealth and fame. His grandfather married her grandmother who was twelve years younger than him.
The man had passed away long ago, but the household wealth remained under her grandmother’s control. Each family members were successful individuals, some were renowned politicians, lawyers, doctors, models, engineers or business magnates. They all lived in prestigious neighborhood all across Northern America and Europe, but their family main manor was located in Houston. Family relation is still considered important for them and their grandma as the eldest member was the most respected person in the household.
Unfortunately for her, her grandmother, Greta Wilhelm Sterling was an absolutely insufferable old woman. She was far from your typical sweet loving grandmother. She came from an aristocratic so she had always been in a sheltered environment, someone who had never known hardship and was raised in a society where people were not considered equal due to their race or social class, she had a tendency to look down on people she considered commoners.
When her father who was the youngest of her three sons decided to marry a mere commoner woman, her mother who came from an ordinary background, all hell ties broke loose, Greta was completely against it but her father was too in love with her mother and decided to marry her anyway despite her disapproval.
It was from the on did her family became the black sheep in the household, it took years before her grandmother was willing to accept her father again. Her birth did have somewhat of an effect on her. She allowed their family to reside in the household with them instead of the crappy apartment they were staying at and ever since she had been living in the right wing of the family’s manor.
It was common for old school wealthy people to have generations of family living together in the same house. They simply had a lot of space there.
One of her uncle’s family lived on their own in a neighborhood near Houston. While the other one, the eldest remained in the same house but they stayed in the left wing area which had more space than hers.
Even from an early age she could tell that her family was definitely treated differently. Her grandmother paid less attention and respect to them to begin with but it became far worse when she ended up in an arranged marriage with Adonis. That one truly upsets her grandmother and she had been acting cold to her ever since despite being one of her grandchild.
It was why she needed to gain back her favor because as long as she was alive, the woman would play a huge role in her life and in the household. Of course she had thought of moving before but when she realized Adonis could not be relied on, she was not able to. It was difficult enough for her to sustain herself. Her career was thriving but if she could save money on mortgage, why wouldn’t she?
Each year one of the family member would be in charge and responsible for the preparation, last year it was her first cousin Cynthia who held the party and everyone praised her fr the work, the party was one of the most successful one the family had held in a while and the woman had gained favor in their grandma’s eyes. It was not an easy task trying to surpass her but Vian was doing her best. She made sure everything was perfect, especially considering how special that year’s party would be.
The party would serve as an opening ceremony for the inheritance battle of the household. Greta’s health had worsened each year and she knew she would only have a few years left to leave at most.
She was old and lived a fulfilled life already so she was not complaining, but she also knew that if she had no made all the inheritance rules clear there would literally be bloodshed in the family. So she had announced she would make a system where one family would be the main inheritance of the whole Sterling fortune, while the rest received whatever was left.
Everyone thought it was unfair and the family fortune should be split equally among the children but her grandmother had another idea. The inheritance should be given to the most capable family. The one she knew would never ruin their long legacy of wealth. It had to be someone smart enough to manage the wealth and grow it as well.
Vivianne’s parents had long been disqualified from receiving the inheritance simply because they had been distancing themselves. However, she was different. For her it was not exactly for the amount of wealth she could gain, but her intention was to restore her family’s honor as well. She was already at a disadvantageous position.
Because she was the least favorable grandchild, but she thought if she could impress her grandmother throughout the year and convinced her she was capable, maybe she stood a chance.
She was planning everything when suddenly someone tapped her shoulder, she turned around and saw Adonis there. Ah yes, sometimes she almost forgot that she was married with a husband already, for some strange reason Adonis appeared invisible to her.
“What do you want?” she asked him. He informed her that he had cleaned everything and cooked dinner for her. Yes, because she was always busy with her work and Adonis had nothing to do he had tried to help out with the housework a bit. They had staffs and maids around in the house but he wanted to prove himself somewhat useful and contributed when he could.
She sighed and turned off her phone, stood up and gave him a small nod and a forced smile with a whisper of thank you thrown in between. Sometimes she wondered why she even married him to begin with, perhaps it was due to her respect for her mother or maybe it was because she wanted to escape him, either way, sometimes she regretted it a bit although as a husband he was quite caring and attentive. Or perhaps it was because he had nothing better to do around.
This time during dinner, she decided to discuss the party matter with him.
“So, do you have anything to wear this year? Make sure you get a fine, well-tailored suit. We don’t want them to think you don’t know how to dress for the occasion. This year grandma will be opening the chance for the inheritance. We have to make sure we impress her enough. I need to restore my family’s name in everyone’s eyes and this is the best possible way to do that. Do you understand?”
Adonis looked a bit bothered when she mentioned the party. He knew exactly what the gathering would mean for him. It would be the first year he attended the party since their marriage had only lasted for a year but he could already tell it would be a challenge for him.
In his mind, he was already preparing himself for the worst.
"The little things? The little moments? They aren't little."-Jon Kabat Zinn-***It was the day of the family gathering, Vian was preparing herself for the party since early in the morning, she had reconfirmed everything to the event organizer and knew it was all perfect and ready. The first thing on her plan that day was heading to the salon, she needed to get her hair done and she also needed to do some quick skin treatment to make sure she was glowing for the evening. She could have done her makeup on her own so that was not a necessary part but she also needed to head over to the boutique to pick up her custom made gown for the day. It was fair to say her day would be extremely busy. She could not do everything on her own so she made sure Adonis came to tag along with her. He was the one driving since she had to hold her phone quite a lot that morning. The whole ride was pretty quiet, she paid not much attention to hi
"Unhealthy families discourage individual expression. Everyone must conform to the thoughts and actions of the toxic parents. They promote fusion, a blurring of personal boundaries, a welding together of family members. On an unconscious level, it is hard for family members to know when one ends and another begins. In their effort to be close, they often suffocate one another's individuality."-Susan Forward-***Since Vian was the person responsible for the party, she was also the one welcoming the guests as they arrived. Although the guest was her own family members, sometimes she felt a bit alien whenever she was among them. Yes, she was raised with the same kind of lifestyle they had, good education, never lacked any comfort or privileges most common people would not have, she still felt out of place sometimes because of her mother’s humble background. The previous years she had tried to stay away from the spotlight for the sa
"It's a feeling without a lid, of what you would do, physically, verbally, to protect the one thing that is your greatest love."-Lena Headey-***Adonis barged into the restroom to calm himself down a bit. All the insults which had been thrown at him in the past hour was too much. He had no idea why they hated him so much, he had never done anything wrong or bad to them yet somehow they always treated him like he was not even a human being. Was it because he was poor? Don’t poor people deserve even the slightest bit of respect and human decency? Why were they so cruel? He knew it was useless to question it because it would not change anything. That family was one of the worst he had ever seen. Prior to meeting them he had never believed that some wealthy people were arrogant bunch because the ones he had known before were all very kind and humble. Sometimes he would question himself on why he even got into the family. He s
"No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of others."-Charles Dickens-***Once they had arrived home, the first thing Vian did was to turn on all the lamp and rushed into the bathroom to take the first aid kit. She knew it might have been too long for her to start mending on his wound but she thought it was better than nothing. She pulled the drawer and took the box out of the shelf and brought it to their bedroom.Adonis was seated on the edge of their bed when she returned, he had taken off his suit and changed into a casual t-shirt and shorts for bed instead. His eyes were staring at the full length mirror right across him and saw the bruises on his lips and cheek from Carson’s punch earlier. He did not like how it looked because he knew they would only darken overtime, maybe turned a bit green and odd looking, but there was also a part in him that felt a bit proud of the bruise because it was a
"There are no wrong turns, only unexpected paths,"-Mark Nepo-***He had just sent more resumes and CV to different companies and thought of making himself a lunch. Apparently the whole family members really did not want to have anything to do with their family because they even placed a separate kitchen and dining room, but for Adonis this was an advantage because he could do everything he wanted in peace without any disturbance from the others.Every day Adonis would prepare the breakfast, lunch and dinner for him and Vian. The household had some staffs to clean up their place but occasionally he would also clean up the place here and there. It had become his habit for almost a year. Besides, he would also schedule his day and that day his schedule was pretty darn empty. He thought of spending the day going out to the market to shop for groceries. Yes, he could have just asked one of the staff to do it for him but he mu
"Everything can change at any moment, suddenly and forever."-Paul Auster-***There was a time when Adonis thought he was born to struggle forever, yet it all changed in a snap of an eye. He slowly drove his car to the restaurant where he would meet the man who claimed he knew of his father. He did not wish to put so much expectation in just yet for he did not wish to be disappointed but he did have a bit of faith within him that told him to continue driving.Once he arrived he mentioned the man’s name to the staff and she led him right through the caller man. He had booked a quiet spot in the corner just for the two of them, where no one could disturb their lunch. For the first time ever he met the mysterious caller that made him lose his sleep. The man appeared to be in his sixties, with trimmed white beard and hair all over. His skin was wrinkly all over as proof of his life maturity. He wore a well-tailored black suit
"All discarded lovers should be given a second chance, but with somebody else."-Mae West-***Vivianne arrived at work that day and she was immediately greeted by the receptionist who had informed her that she received a gift that day from a mysterious sender. She walked over to the desk and the woman handed her over a box and a bouquet of pink and white tulip which was one of her favorite flower. She looked a bit confused, who could possibly send her that kind of gift, she already knew it could not possibly come from Adonis. That man barely gifted her anything before just because of his financial situation. She brought it back to her office desk and checked the card which came along with it which wrote, ‘for my dear Vivianne, I love you.’ She had no idea who sent it because there was no sender’s name. Opening up the gift, she found a velvet jewelry box with an Italian private jewelry brand embossed on it. She
"Women are meant to be loved, not to be understood."-Oscar Wilde-***Adonis could not really sleep well that night for various of reasons, the first one being that he was too excited to start his new training at the company which legally belonged to him. Second reason was he kept on thinking about Ana and felt a deep and dark sense of jealousy and possessiveness he had never felt before when she told him that her ex wanted her back, even sending over some flowers and gift for her, because he knew Adonis was not a man who would often send her such gifts due to his circumstance. He tried sleeping soundly but each time he closed his eyes, those two things clashed and haunted him. He ended up tossing himself back and forth on the bed. Until he turned himself to her and decided to ease away his fear of the newfound competitiveness by staring into her face. He did not know why but each time he saw her sleeping like that he felt a strange se
